Face and Neck Eczema: Treating it the Natural way (topically)…The products and Routine I will be testing

Eczema Skincare Complete Overhaul Alert!! Out with the old in the with new…

So I recently mentioned my lack of natual and organic products in my skincare routine. With real life getting in the way, I found myself using whatever worked ‘okay’ from the local pharmacy or Boots without spending the time to review natural products to alleviate my symptoms (which is obviously laughable since that was the reason I first started this blog….I apologise!) Now I have mentioned topically in the post title, because well if I’m honest I think treating eczema is a lot more than surface deep! Diet, exercise and stress relief are also important. Topical treatment is just one step.

So over the weekend, I have been looking up products that would suit my skin type to get back to treating my eczema the au natural way! Now even if I have a eczema prone face, my skin is also oily at times with break outs and so I have to think about a mixture of products to account for this. In my search for skincare routines, I came across an amazing beauty blog which – though not focused on natural care – has amazing tips on skincare routine on a daily basis. Frankly I cannot believe I’ve missed this blog before because it was such a good read. If you get time please have a read, you will not regret it!! http://www.carolinehirons.com. She is a frank an honest writer who has a lot of knowledge about products and is a qualified facialist herself and the positive posts on her wall have reassured me even more that a lot of what she says WORKS! And now yes I know I have eczema and that a ‘normal’ skincare routine may not work but at the same time, some normality is important as long as we cater in our personal skin needs too.

Now I have always felt that ever since I have had eczema on my face, I have reduced my skincare routine down to a simple face wash (if my skin is extremely bad or on the verge I tend to go water alone out of fear of a flare up!) and moisturiser and frankly, the reason I have begun to want a better routine is because I feel that my skin is clogging up and not really getting any better, It doesn’t feel clean, fresh or calm and a lack of natural products and full routine may be the reason….When my skin calmed down after I finished my undergrad, I cleansed, toned and moisturised and my skin stayed at a manageable level so I’m thinking that the routine did my skin some good (might not be but I’ll put it to the test anyway in hopes!). The thorough cleansing, toning before just loading up on hydration seemed to help. Now after reading the wise words of Caroline Hirons, I must say that much of this routine is adapted to her outlined routine: http://www.carolinehirons.com/2013/06/routines-cheat-sheet.html because I definitely think a good cleanse is important. I feel my complexion never looks fresh and clean anymore, my asian skin should be glowing and looking bright but instead its dull, uneven and in need of some real TLC!

Now you might read this routine (and Caroline’s at that) and think WOW so much, I admit it seems a lot but the positive posts on Ms Hirons’ blog show just how amazing the methods have been for many people and so I have tried to tailor my skincare regime around hers though this post concentrates on Cleanse tone moisturise. A current working method seems like a good place to start in my searches for an eczema skincare routine though!

Now below I am listing the products I am incorporating into my routine to follow a similar routine as Ms Hirons, I will go through them in the stages of the routine. My products are mostly natural and I purchased them via the Naturisimo.com site and I think they actually ship worldwide which is great (they also throw in some samples at a small price which is great too!). Some were purchased on Amazon when I compared the prices and found them cheaper, as frankly the cost has been astonishing! I have money saved from my birthday and christmas and so what better way to spend it than on my skin (I’m definitely a skin shopaholic!). Natural seems to be more expensive, but if I’m honest I spend so much anyway on eczema related products that it doesn’t phase me as much (my sisters would have a heart attack at thinking I spend 100s on skincare!).

So here gos…Before buying, I did type each into google to look up reviews and most have had good reviews so let us hope! Let me know if you have tried any of these…I’m pretty excited to start. Now I know that there is an awful lot of product involved in the Hirons approach and so I am firstly starting with the simple cleanse, tone, moisturise before attempting the other stages of her routine, I thought buying one of these alone wouldn’t work as I would then still be using chemical based products for the other stages. Guns blazing may not be great either but I thought trialling each product and adding them in one by one each day would be best in terms of these 3 stages.

I will review each product alone so don’t worry as I know I am basically just listing them here! Thought I would give you a heads up 🙂 Quite Excited to try some of these!

In my Fear of Water and Cleansing your face post, I highlighted my lack of water use and I realised that oil/balm cleansing would suit my skin well. Clean it thoroughly yet not leave it tight and dry. I always feel that cleansing once if I have worn make up doesn’t rid of all the grime either and so I love the idea of Double cleansing (yes read it on Ms Hirons site!). This is where you cleanse your face first with an oil/ balm baser cleanser and then use a milk/gel cleanser second.

Now I have already used Suti Skincare’s Cleanse so I decided to try completely new natural products. I could always go back to this but I thought new reviews would be good!

The Oil/Balm products I have opted for:

1) Balance me Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm 125 ml (£20): http://www.naturisimo.com/products.cfm?id=3501. The info given:

Balance Me Cleanse & Smooth Face Balm is a daily must-have for its dual cleansing and smoothing action to enhance your skin’s natural radiance. Antioxidant rich Arctic cloudberry, gentle Roman chamomile and skin brightening red mandarin smooth away daily grime and makeup leaving skin soft, radiant and calmly clean.

Gently polishing oatmeal sloughs away dead skin cells and encourages cell renewal. Shea and cocoa butter, softening rosehip, camellia, kukui nut and virgin coconut oils, rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and lipids provide a layer of skin-boosting goodness which benefits both young and more mature skins.

SKIN TYPES: For all skin types, ideally suited for normal to dry/sensitive skins.

HOW TO USE: Warm a small amount of balm in clean hands. Smooth over face and neck, gently massaging the balm with your finger tips in circular movements, allowing the oats to polish the skin for at least 30 seconds. Apply warm water and continue massaging for a further 30 seconds. Close eyes and wipe carefully over lids and eye lashes, avoiding direct contact with eyes. Wet the muslin cloth provided with warm water and remove balm residue from your skin. Pat skin dry then apply our moisture-rich face cream or radiance face oil.

2)  The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser 75ml (£34.95) http://www.naturisimo.com/products.cfm?id=5147& The info given:

The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser dissolves dirt, grime and makeup, including eye makeup while soothing and conditioning the skin. The result? Fresh, silky soft, glowing skin.

Cleansing is the most important part of maintaining and achieving beautiful skin. Without cleansed skin moisturizers and special treatments will not penetrate properly and dead skin is not removed. This organic cleanser is infused with antioxidant Carrot and Calendula as well as decongesting Rosemary and soothing Lavender for a really deep but gentle cleanse.

SKIN TYPES: For all skin types. Ideal for dry and mature skin.

Ingredients: Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Cera Alba (Beeswax) Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract Daucus Carota Root Extract Olea Europaea (olive) Fruit Oil Hypericum Perforatum Flower Extract Tocopherol Nat (Vit E) Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Oil Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Oil

For the water based (not sure if this would be a milk/gel to say!):

1) Pai Camellia and Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser 100ml (£25) http://www.naturisimo.com/products.cfm?id=948&  I got this on Amazon though for £15 for 50ml as a trial pack.

Info Given: Pai Organic Cleanser is gentle and effectively removes everyday grime and make-up. Bursting with omega 3 and vitamins A, B, C & E, this cleanser works to hydrate your skin, leaving it soft and supple. The included exfoliating muslin cloth lifts away dead skin cells to leave a smooth and fresh complexion.

Camellia oil lifts away dirt and make-up effortlessly while rose extract leaves skin beautifully toned and hydrated. This organic cleanser is detergent-free and does not contain synthetic chemicals, alcohol or beeswax.

SKIN TYPES: For all skin types, in particular sensitive, allergic, eczema, rosacea and urticaria prone skin

Now Ms Hiron suggests the use of an acid tone then a hydrating mist. With my skin type, I am not sure about the first as the one she recommeneds is for oily skins and well that isn’t me! But for hydrating Mist:

1) Balance Me Skin Bright Hydrating Face Mist 60ml (£20) http://www.naturisimo.com/products.cfm?id=4796&

Balance Me Skin Bright Hydrating Face Mist adds instant moisture and brightens tired skin, fixes make-up and leaves dewy glow on your face. Blended with super hydrating hyaluronic acid which holds more than 100 times its weight in water; replenishing and balancing pineapple and rose floral water and revitalising neroli and spikenard essential oils. This natural mist offers an instant surge of moisture whenever your skin needs it most.

AM: Ren Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream – 50ml (£25) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ren-Hydra-Calm-Global-Protection-Cream/dp/B00AZU2A76/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1388365217&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=ren+skincare+hydra+calm.

Here is the actual website http://www.renskincare.com/p/3112

  • Hydrates and replenishes.
  • Skin feels calmed and soothed.
  • Protects against free radicals and environmental aggression.

Skin type:

Sensitive and/or delicate skin. Skin affected by pollution (city life, smoke).

PM: Antipodes Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream 60ml (£32.95) http://www.naturisimo.com/products.cfm?id=2890&

Antipodes Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream deeply nourishes your skin with pure 100% avocado pear oil, containing antioxidants and packed with Vitamins E, A, B1, B2, C and D.

Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream also features calendula; oil from the petals of the marigold flower which is highly regarded throughout history for its healing and repairing properties. Manuka honey serves to soothe and moisten your skin and the warm and mystical aroma of sandalwood both purifies and uplifts your skin.

I have also brought a few serums and gels to try to compliment this routine such as Heal Gel and some to even out my complexion, however, I won’t be adding them all in just yet! Excited to start though!

What do you think of these products? Used any of them? Will review these products in good time 🙂

For now, wish you all a happy new year….2014 here we come!
